Friday Night Fights, Round 8 Summary

So, in case anyone is keeping track, we had 39 people register for ranked matches at the last Friday Night Fights event making this one of our most successful events to date.

All the data from the ranked matches has been updated in the Friday Night Fights Leaderboards.  They are a running total of players' scores based on the bracket they ended their tournament or ranked match run on.  These scores will continue to grow and make seeding for future events possible.

We had three ranked matches (ranbats) in the following games: Super Street Fighter II Turbo HD Remix, Street Fighter III: Third Strike, and Street Fighter IV.  All were run as double-elimination, best 2 of 3 rounds, and best 2 of 3 games.  Several people tried to get some BlazBlue ranbats running, as well as Soul Calibur IV... but we just aren't getting the people out to play those games.  It might be time to have a 3D/Aksys fighter night with some Guilty Gear, BlazBlue, Soul Calibur, Tekken, and Virtual Fighter.  Maybe I'll figure out a non-FNF night for that.

The results are:

Thanks to everyone who attended, helped out, and brought extra gear for people to use.  I'd also like to give special thanks to Bandith (Mr. B), Dan (opello), and Tim (Akulious) for donating a total of $50 for the night... it's much appreciated!  That was half our expenses right there.

If you have any feedback, suggestions, or ideas on how to run these in the future - let me know.  I can't change much unless I know what you guys like or dislike.  If it helps, I can throw up a discussion forum as well if people want that kind of thing, or I can setup a group thread in the SRK forums to accomodate our group as well.

Friday Night Fights, Round 7 Summary

Kind of a slow fight night with just 10 people showing up due to weather concerns and other commitments.  Is the idea just running out of steam, or was it just a bad night for a fight night?  Should I be doing things on a different day?  Let me know what the fight nights are missing or need to do to keep on rolling.

We rented two stations, played some Street Fighter IV, BlazBlue, Samurai Showdown, and Virtua Fighter 5.  It was still a good outing, but would've been nice to have a few more people around.

Thanks to everyone who came out, and thanks to Bandith for donating some cash for the event.  I appreciate it!

If you have any feedback, suggestions, or ideas on how to run these in the future - let me know.  I can't change much unless I know what you guys like or dislike.

Friday Night Fights, Round 6 Summary

So, in case anyone is keeping track, we had 22 people register for ranked matches at the last Friday Night Fights event. That does not include a 10 people who were just there to have some fun. So, in total, we were looking at 32 people who attended the event (or at least alerted me that they were there for the event).

SSF2THDR was run as a 3-match Round Robin, while the other two games were run as double-elimination, best 2 of 3 rounds, and best 2 of 3 games.

The results are:

Street Fighter IV

1: Akulious
2: The Prizm
3: Shey
4: z.epiphany
5: Josh
5: opello
7: Kyle K
7: Crossover Ken
9: Mexkoala
9: Matt K
13: Driven2B

Street Fighter III: Third Strike

1: Crossover Ken
2: Shey
3: Kyle K
4: z.epiphany
5: The Prizm
5: JR
7: Akulious
7: Nagol
9: Josh

Super Street Fighter II Turbo HD Remix

1: The Prizm
2: z.epiphany
3: Shey
4: Josh
5: Akulious
6: Crossover Ken
7: Matt K

Thanks to everyone who attended, helped out, and brought extra gear for people to use.  It sounds like everyone had a great time!

This was the first time we ran Street Fighter III: Third Strike, but it certainly won't be the last since it seems people were having a good time playing it.  Round Robin format was apparently the way to go, since everyone who played SSF2HDR commented on it.  There were some requests for playing more frequently at possibly different venues and running some team-based events, which we will probably do.

CoD 4 - 4v4 (7 Teams)

  1. N4CR
  2. Bagdaddies
  3. South Dakota Select

I can post the full brackets if people are interested, but I think the top three in each category is solid for now.  Overall we had 88 unique players enter the tournament, with a headcount during the peak of Halo activity winding up at 164 people watching the event.  Seems like our events are picking up some attendance!  Generally speaking, we had a great turnout.  Out of pocket expenses were just a bit over $200 after all was said and done... so not too bad really.  One of these days, I might actually run something that gets me out of the hole. :P

Anyway, thanks again to everyone who showed up for the event!  The feedback consensus thus far has been pretty positive, with the only real complaints being the MLG map/settings troubles early on in the tournament and somes rules changes, confusion, and turmoil for the Call of Duty final.  Knowing what I know now though will help eliminate some of those problems in the future and make sure we have more solid rules going into the event.

I'd like to give a special thanks to the members of team Skillin for helping out with the Halo 3 setup, as well as to team Fistfull of Bananas for attempting to donate equipment (that it turns out we didn't need) for the event.

If anyone has any pictures of the event, please let me know or send them to soofoogamers [at] gmail [dot] com and I'll post them up in our gallery.

Friday Night Fights, Round 5 Summary

We had kind of a small turnout for our free-play night last weekend, but it picked up around 9 that night.  What I gathered is that people just don't want to play a bunch of retro fighters... in fact, we ended up busting out Street Figther IV due to player request.  Maybe it was poor advertising on our part, or Hobo Days in Brookings... but we had four stations and a total of 16 players for the night.

We had no ranked matches or tournaments this last time, just people playing fighting games.

Thanks to everyone who attended, helped out, and brought extra gear for people to use.  It sounds like everyone who was there had a good time.  About six people (myself included) stuck around until well after two in the morning playing Street Fighter trade-offs.  Let me know what you guys want to see at FnF and I'll do my best to bring it.  If we started doing something that turned you off to FnF, let us know as well.  I wouldn't want to lose players because of something we tried.
